Things You Should Know about Shoulder Pain and Its Variants
Apart from headaches and back pain, shoulder pain and its variants have emerged as one of the most common places of pain in the human body. The shoulder consists of 16 different soft tissue structures and three bones, and all of them affect your stability and movement.
Causes
of Shoulder Pain and Its Variants
Although each shoulder complaint seems to stem from different
causes, four major causes that give rise to shoulder pain
and variants include the following:
· Arthritis: Most commonly, arthritis develops as osteoarthritis
in the shoulder joint. It may be related to previous injuries like tears or
infection. Often times this leads to reduced movement and more chronic pain
later on.
· Instability: Either by trauma or overuse, shoulder instability occurs when the head of the upper arm is forced out of the socket. Repetitive dislocations may also lead to chronic shoulder instability and arthritis.
· Impingement: Impingement is also a major cause of shoulder
problems. As the arm is lifted, a bone on the shoulder impinges on the bursa
and rotator cuff tendons. Sometimes, this is also a cause of arthritis, while
at other times, it may be a result of overuse. Over time, impingement may also
lead to tears. In many cases where impingement is diagnosed, the root cause of
the issue is adhesion. Once the adhesion is removed, impingement is no longer
an issue.
· Tendon Tears: Tendon tears are another common injury of the
shoulder. Most tears are a result of overuse and not seeking treatment. Small
pains gradually become large pains, which eventually lead to tears of
structures that have finally weakened enough. The rotator muscles—teres minor,
infraspinatus, supraspinatus, and subscapularis—are most commonly torn.
· Overuse: Since the shoulder joint is involved in many
day-to-day activities, the constant movement and involvement lead to overuse.
Bursitis and Tendonitis are the most commonly diagnosed shoulder problems.
Overuse injuries are not inflammatory processes but degenerative. Stretching
also does little to solve the problem. There are many structures in the
shoulder joint, all of which try to work together to accomplish proper movement
of the joint. Overuse often leads to tight muscles and increased friction. Over
time, without proper treatment or recovery, adhesion will form and sometimes
tendonosis, which is degeneration of the tendon.
